Satellite Music Hall Opens at Crosstown: What It Means for Memphis Venue Jobs

MEMPHIS, TN — Crosstown has a new stage, and it came with payroll. Live Nation's Satellite Music Hall opened its doors on September 4 in the shadow of Crosstown Concourse, and by opening night the operator had put more than 100 Memphis-area workers on staff. For anyone who wants their paycheck to come with a soundtrack, the Midtown venue is now one of the more interesting new employers in town.

A 1,300-capacity concert hall named for the label that became Stax, roughly 100 shows a year, and a student apprenticeship built in from day one.

What Opened at Crosstown

The name is a nod to Satellite Records, the label that became Stax before Soulsville turned into a pilgrimage site. The building leans into that history, too, using reclaimed materials from the 1927 Sears building that Crosstown Concourse brought back to life. Hometown band The Band Camino opened the room with two nights on September 4 and 5.

Inside, the hall stacks a standing main floor under a mezzanine, with touring-grade sound and lighting. Crosstown Concourse says the venue expects about 100 shows a year, and the room also holds KultureCity sensory-accessibility certification, which means quiet zones and staff trained to help guests who need them.

The calendar is already full. The venue's Live Nation page lists more than a dozen October dates, from Umphrey's McGee on October 1 to a Halloween-night hip-hop and R&B party. Every one of those nights needs a crew.

🔥 The Jobs a Room Like This Runs On

Here is the honest picture. The big opening hire is done: Crosstown Concourse reports Live Nation brought on more than 100 Memphis-area workers before the doors opened. Projections at the groundbreaking put the eventual total near 150. Live Nation has not announced a new hiring round, so there is no headcount to chase this week.

That does not mean the door is shut. Concert venues run on part-time and event-based crews, and those rosters turn over steadily. The work usually spans security and guest services, bartending and barbacks, box office, cleaning crews, stagehands and production assistants, plus kitchen and service staff for The Vinyl Room lounge. Get your resume ready, and watch Live Nation's careers page for postings tagged to Satellite Music Hall.

If you already work nights around Overton Square, Cooper-Young or Broad Avenue, you know the rhythm. Event staffing is flexible and it pairs well with a day job or classes at the University of Memphis.

🎓 A Pipeline for Stax Students

Live Nation built a training track into the deal. Through the Stax Music Academy's Music Employs initiative, students get apprenticeship experience in concert production and venue operations, the backstage work that turns into careers in audio, lighting, touring and event management. The academy also got the first look at the stage: a community preview on September 2 featured Stax students, with proceeds going to the school.
